Bio

Meet Sky! This D.M.V. boss babe is an accountant by day and vlogger on the side. Sky’s Youtube channel is all about adapting to corporate culture, while maintaining self-acceptance.

Tell us about your vlog.

On my YouTube channel, Sky Rodriguez, I’m passionate about grooming inner city students into young professionals. I grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and when I started my internship at a top accounting firm, I felt self-conscious about my accent, skin color, and fashion. I didn’t think I looked good in suits. My stepmom took me shopping and I looked 40, not 20. So, my YouTube is about fitting in by learning how to adapt to the corporate culture, but also standing out by accepting yourself.

What happened with your science blog? Is this something you put to rest intentionally when the vlog took off?

I almost forgot about that blog! I had a science blog when I was a biology major. Once I switched to accounting, I laid it to rest. May she rest in peace.

What makes you a boss?

I want to be careful when using the word “boss.” I don’t cut any checks, no one is on my payroll, I don’t fire people. However, I’m a dope individual because I maximize the 24 hours in my day. I really love to sleep, but when I’m not sleeping, I’m utilizing every hour in the waking day to not just rely on my 9 to 5.

Proudest moment in your career AND personal life?

That’s a hard question because I still don’t feel I’ve peaked yet. Right now the proudest moment was graduating with my bachelors and getting into a prestigious grad school.

Lowest point?

Getting kicked out of the same grad school for not having a 3.0 GPA in time for graduation.

Most famous quote?

My high school yearbook quote was, “I was born ready.” It’s a little funny, but I still mean it today. The quote came about because before graduation someone asked if I was ready. To which I replied, “I was born ready.” While I did feel prepared for college and adulthood, I also mean that I was born for the hustler spirit I still carry today.”

Why should everyone have a #LadyTribe to lean on?

Only half the world really understands us! Other women. “Woman to woman” talks don’t only happen when your man is cheating, they also happen when you need encouragement in a male-dominated industry, inspiration, solace, sisterhood, your wig needs to be fixed, or you need an emergency tampon.

What passion project are you working on right now?

I’m working on a clothing brand, Not Your Ordinary, which exists to bridge the gap for young professionals who want to stand out but fit in with the office culture and still be dope on the weekends.

What's your next big move?

Buying a house.

What is the hardest decision you've ever had to make?

Leaving my mom in New York to move to the DMV. She ended up getting married! I feel better now that I know she’s not alone out there.

Share one piece of advice that you find most important with all the ladies out there working hard to make their dreams come true.

Do not compare yourself to the left or to the right. If you must look at them, network and try to find some inspiration. Instagram makes everything looks good, easy, and quick, but trust me, no one’s path to success is a straight line.
