My 2020 Quarantine Hair Cut

This quarantine has been so kind to my hair! No need for all that heat (blowouts and styling). I’ve been indulging in hot oil treatments and the best DIY hair masks I could find recipes for. But just because hair salons were temporarily canceled didn’t mean my hair growth would pause. My hair had grown so long and just got so out of control. The struggle of long knotty hair was getting far too real. You know your hair is too long when you keep stepping on your ponytail during yoga.

I figured we may be looking at another global lockdown and I didn’t want to be stuck waiting another several months to get my hair cut. So I decided to go short because hair grows back quicker than we realize and if I don’t like it, no one will really see it because I won’t be leaving the house.

Find your style

I searched through so many Pinterest boards and IG profiles for popular celebrity haircuts before I finally decided to go nice and short. And here’s what I came up with — “The Lob” aka Long Bob. My haircut was inspired by Glamour’s recent article “53 Lob Haircut Ideas That Prove a Long Bob Is Always a Good Choice” featuring the best lob hair cuts styled by celebrities. Take a look at the borrowed images below. I liked Margot Robby’s length in #27 featuring a “Long Lob.” But, I preferred a more voluminous look like the hairstyles shown on Olivia Munn in #35 and Jennifer Lawrence in #41.

Book an appointment

Now, more than ever, appointments are so important. Many salons can no longer accept walk-ins, in order to comply with COVID-19 restrictions, so book an appointment in advance and save the date on your calendar. Unfortunately, my usual guy for color and cut in SoHo was all booked out and so was my backup (Harumi who is in Chinatown), so I gave my boyfriend’s hairdresser a try and stalking the salon’s IG page. I couldn’t be happier with my fresh cut!

Book a house call

Once you’ve got your style picked out, book an appointment with my girl Tori Townsend from Public Image NYC! The salon is located in Flatiron at West 27th Street between 7th and 8th Ave, specifically inside the Fashion Institute of Technology. I’m still not big on public transportation right now, and a lot of people probably feel the same way, so I checked out the cost of a taxi ride. After I estimated that an Uber would cost me approximately $25 each way to the salon from downtown, I decided to just spend the $50 and enjoy a haircut in the comfort of my own home.

*P.S. - Both Tori and I did wear masks during my appointment, and confirmed that neither of us was feeling sick prior to the appointment.
